Brooke Shields
Her Calvin Klein commercials were controversial at the time, and people would talk about them more than whatever show they were watching.
She had a contradictory slutty Lolita, virginal Princeton student reputation.
I didn't watch "Suddenly Susan," but she seems like one of the least funny sitcom stars ever.
Were you ever a fan of Brooke Shields? What do you think of her now?

She looks like Tyrone Power now. She's before my time but I don't think she was ever successfully slutty looking. She had an Alice in Wonderland look, her body was just too big for her once very pretty face.

Brooke was claiming to be a virgin into her late-20s, but years later she admitted to sleeping with Dean Cain when they were freshmen at Princeton. This PR stunt was Teri's stupid idea and I think the virginal persona limited the types of roles Brooke was offered. Otherwise, Brooke seems remarkably genuine. Beautiful child, handsome woman.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 22, 2018 5:12 AM |
Her virginity limited the roles she played? Like when she played a child prostitute? Or when she played a teenager stuck on an island getting boned and then birthing out a baby?
I remember her doing a good job in Freeway.

"Beautiful child, handsome woman."... good description. She was absolutely stunning as a child.. I even think she was more beautiful than Elizabeth Taylor as a child. With all of her beauty, she seems to be genuinely nice and down to earth.

R9, she was a minor in those roles. It was very bizarre in the 1980s, when she was an adult, to watch her declare and allude to her virginity. She was faking it, her "virgin" routine was so peculiar and it was because Mom Teri was managing her career.

Mmmmmm....but you might argue that her own (along with her mother's) conservative image of herself limited the roles she accepted. This may have been a counter reaction to her earlier sexualized roles. Terri Shields convinced her daughter to turn down the role of Elvira in SCARFACE...presumably turned off by all the cursing and cocaine. Shields turned down WILD ORCHID and the lesbian girlfriend part (Roxy) in BASIC INSTINCT because those required nudity. In many ways she was quite straight laced, even though her breakthrough roles, and some modeling shots, were [italic]risque.[/italic]
She chose awful material (like BRENDA STARR and SAHARA) at a transitional time in her film career when it mattered most, and after more bad films slid down into TV work...and being a replacement performer on Broadway.

Turning down Scarface may have been a good move on her part because she never could have acted it.
And turning down Wild Orchid wasn't a bad move either as it would have done nothing for her career. Same goes for Basic Instinct. It's not like those were breakout or award winning roles for the women who ended up with them.
Brooke is good at what she does which is... limited.

I suspect the part she probably turned down was that of the sister, Gina (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), and the details have become blurred over the years.
Gina is a better role for her type...but perhaps Terri felt Shields shouldn't have been playing secondary roles (?)
I agree she could never have topped Pfeiffer's performance; but if that was the role that was offered to her, she didn't even try.

Brooke Shields has always seemed like a very nice person, who worked hard at her education and bettering herself. I think her mom kind of sank her, though. While she orchestrated her daughters early attention and success, she then became her manager, and in Shields' autobiography she says there was no emphasis at all on developing a long term career, or abilities. Jobs were accepted if they paid well and were shot in nice locations that fit into school vacations. That was the basic criteria.

I don't think she's ever had a lesbian romance. She was asked about this in an ADVOCATE interview (after she played Cherry Jones' domestic partner in something), and she said something along the lines of how she hadn't, and yet she met women she was attracted to every day.
That's a big difference between straight men and straight women. Women can acknowledge that attraction exists on many levels (mental, physical, emotional) and that noting you're attracted to someone, some how, doesn't necessarily change your sexuality.

Her mom was a very lively and attractive woman who was self conscious about her working class roots in New Jersey. She had deep insecurities, but she had survival instincts. She was an alcoholic, and this clouds someone's emotions and behavior. She was very protective of her daughter and also other coworkers, but she didn't have very good creative instincts.
I think the mom might have been bi. It isn't really documented, but she was always with a close friend Brooke called "Aunt Lilah" (?)

She is 2 years older than me. I had a photo album full of her pics from the magazines. Looking at the pictures in this thread, it's obvious she did the nose job in college. I don't think she had a nose job. Why would she need one? I think it is that people's noses are a feature that appear to change as one ages...as baby fat goes away, etc. and more of the structure is revealed. Plus, I think the nose does not continue to grow exactly the same way as the rest of the face does. It's something to do with it being made of cartiledge...not bone.
I don't know when she could have been out of sight long enough to get a nose job, without anyone noticing or commenting on it.

She was beautiful back then! I think she’s come out ahead, despite her fucked-up early life. Nothing bad to say about her.
Here’s the vintage gossip:
“Shields, Brooke. Very had to work for: "Nothing is ever good enough for Princess." Bi_____ [bisexual]. Bizarre and currently fractured relationship with her domineering mother. Claimed virginity long past anyone thought it likely or possible, especially those at Princeton who knew of her relationship with Dean Cain. Was paid by Michael Jackson and George Michael to act the beard for them. A harridan for a mother. Very friendly and polite in person. Also linked with Andre Agassi, Prince Albert of Monaco, Dodi al Fayeed, Woody Harrelson, John-John Kennedy, Julian Lennon, George Michael (beard duty), Liam Neeson, David Strickland, and John Travolta.”

I've always liked her, and that's about it. I realize she was beautiful when she was young--Elizabeth Taylor was in awe of her natural beauty--but she had the kind of beauty that doesn't draw you in, you just look at it. The problem with Suddenly Susan is that it was originally written to capitalize on the "wacky" character type she played on Friends. The first season of the show had her as a slightly off, accident prone bubblehead.
Then when the producers realized audiences didn't want to tune in weekly to see a slightly insane character as the lead in a weekly show (did they learn nothing from The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd?), in the second season, they turned Susan into a level-headed working girl surrounded by kooks. At that point, the show was nothing special, and it was on a downward trajectory after that.

Brooke did NOT have any surgery on her nose or anything else done while she was in college. Her looks changed during that time because she gained 25 "protective" pounds(as she called them) and it made her look much more square and heavy in the jaw----making her appear more "handsome" than beautiful. There may have been some facial bone maturation going on in that period, too.

I read her book, and the dtnamic was, as she was growing up there was only her and her mom in a New York apartment. It's the teeniest bit like Grey Gardens, in that the mom doesn't seem to have really had friends...her whole life was Brooke, and booze. The relationship was very codependent. (The parents were only married for 6 months or something.)
Then when the daughter got jobs, Teri became her agent and manager and traveled with her to jobs and was on set all the time, so they became even more enmeshed. Brooke arranged the first intervention for her mom when she was 13. There was a strong love and kinship she felt for her mother, and it must have been hard having the public always harp on how terrible your controlling mom is while feeling a need to smile and chirp, "Oh, everything's FINE! She's a GREAT mom!"
But Teri was protective in good ways, too. For instance, on her daughter's second film, set in 1910, they used all authentic costumes. The film looks beautiful, but Brooke began to get a foot infection from some antique mold (or something) that was in her old shoes. The producers were saying "Oh, we need to keep shooting, we're on a schedule, it will be fine, here's some ointment" and Teri was like, "No. We're not coming back to work until she has NEW SHOES! Fuck your continuity problems, you're not infecting my child's FEET!"
I mean, it would be pretty cool if you were an unknown starlet and your mom took on Paramount Pictures for you. That's the OPPOSITE of sleeping with a producer for a part! The mom's like, "Go ahead, hate me. [italic]And get new fuckin' shoes."

The juciest gossip in the book is Susan Sarandon (who played her hooker mother, and must have been in some Method Acting mode) slapped Brooke HARD in one scene, and they had to do it several times. Brooke was shocked, but had an obedient work ethic and did a number of takes.
I think the producers had found somewhere else for Teri to be that day...or doubtless she would have ripped Sarandon's entire head off.

Some facts about Brooke Shields:
She had an infamous, drunken stage mother who promoted her daughter as a sex symbol while she was still a little girl. Nude "artistic" photos were taken of a painted up, oiled up, 10 year old Brooke by a photographer with the unfortunate name of Gary Gross. When she got older she sued him to prevent further use of these pictures and tried unsuccessfully to buy back the negatives. After a lot of legal haranguing the court rejected all Brooke Shields’ claims and decided in Gross’s favour. The trial however, had ruined him financially and had tarnished his reputation. In addition, a change in attitudes towards the “politically correct” had sullied the photographs. They weren't considered "artistic" anymore, if they ever were. They were more like kiddy porn.
Her Calvin Klein commercials were also sexual in nature ("Do you know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing."). She was under 18 when she started doing the suggestive commercials.
She had initial success in the movies that showed her in a sexual manner (Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love). But when she aged out of her Lolita phase nobody was much interested anymore. And the fact that she was a lousy actress didn't help matters. She eventually got marginally better but she was never much better than average or mediocre.
She went to an Ivy League college to prove she had a brain. Her SATS were low but she was accepted at Princeton. She was given special treatment; she was allowed to graduate without having to take the requisite science and math courses.
Her beauty peaked very early and went downhill quickly. While still in her twenties she began to look like a tranny. And as she got older she looked more and more like one. Now she looks a lot like one.

Sarandon was funny in "Rocky Horror" (1975) and her singing is cute. Also pretty good in "Atlantic City" (1981). "Bull Durham" (1988) was the start of a solid run of good scripts and performances that lasted for almost a decade.

R108, you don't know shit about your precious Brookie. This is from an article about her in Princeton magazine about the time she graduated from Princeton:
What’s not to like about Brooke? Well, there are her ego problems. Those who know her say she made a concerted effort to fit in, but she never really made close friends. “It’s hard to penetrate the mask,” says senior Peter Maruka, who dated Shields for three months this year. “Brooke and her image are inseparably intertwined. You can’t forget she’s an actress.”
Then there’s her ubiquitous mother, Teri Shields. Mom’s constant presence at rehearsals for student theatricals, says senior Peter Sachner, got to be annoying. “During production week, which is very tense, no one is allowed to see a preview. But Teri was there, front and center. It seemed condoned and no one who was bothered by it dared ask why.”
Then there’s the suspicion that Brooke was getting special treatment. For example, she was allowed to write her thesis on the treatment of children in the films of Louis Malle—including her own infamous Pretty Baby, in which she played a 12-year-old prostitute. Not the toughest research assignment.

Admirable, really. So many people settle and quit caring about staying curious. Plus, she's always come across as very approachable and normal. She seems like she'd be fun to have a drink with.

Look, mister: Probably the worst thing Brooke Shields ever did was fail to make her bed one morning...and I doubt even THAT happened. The girl wouldn't hurt a mouse.
This is probably because she got invested in appearing perfect from a very early age, overcompensating for her emotionally messy mother.
You can just...SHOVE IT, you meanie monster.

Most people's LOOKS do not peak in their teens. What a stupid assertions and factual lie. The majority of men and women reach the apex of physical attractiveness between the ages of 28 and 35. Obviously there are exceptions, but that is the norm. Brooke was still very beautiful when she sat in the stands, cheering for Agassi. That's when I first became aware of who she was. She was probably about 30 and she looked like a gorgeous Italian movie star. She is a bit mannish now but it she got rid of the long flat hair it would help soften her angular face. She looked great on Wendy Williams not that long ago.

"The business about Brooke being exempted from classes at Princeton is bullshit. I was at Princeton as a graduate student when she was there. She got very good grades."
How would YOU know what her grades were? You're full of shit. And here is exactly what Brooke Shield's "education" at Princeton consisted of. And as the last paragraph clearly states she didn't take ANY hard science courses, no math, not even "computer literacy. Read it and weep, hon:
Brooke Shields majored in French. In four years, she took 116 credits (hours) and got an additional 16 hours of credit for individual work in her junior and senior years. To put it another way, she took 30 one-semester courses.
She took four courses in French language and five in French literature. She took eight courses in drama-related subjects: three in acting, three in cinema analysis, one in dance, one in contemporary English drama. These accounted for 59 percent of her classroom hours.
She took three semesters of ceramics (10 percent).
She took three courses in psychology - introduction to, abnormal and 'Theories of Psychotherapy' (10 percent).
She had two other English courses - 'Women and the Novel' and 'Victorian Children's Literature' (7 percent).
The other courses, one semester each, were 'Philosophy and the Modern Mind,' 'Comparative Family Systems' (sociology), 'The Self in World Religions' and 'History of Earth and Life' (geology). That education apparently contained no courses in classical studies (history, philosophy, literature of the ancient world), medieval history, modern history or American history; no hard science (physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy) requiring any kind of lab; no math; no anthropology; no economics; no political science or government; no basic sociology; no world literature; no American literature; no geography; not even computer literacy.

r103, Brooke's mother revealed her SAT scores in a People Magazine article at the time Brooke entered Princeton.
"Her mother, Teri, claims that Brooke’s SATs were 610 verbal, 610 mathematical—not far below the class averages of 649 and 695 and well ahead of some hockey players."
So her SATs weren't horrible, but low enough that her mother felt the need to defend her by comparing her scores to those of recruited athletes, which tend to be significantly lower than the student body average.

She bearded for Michael Jackson for years. The tabloids reported their "torrid" affair. She was the one who pursued him. In LaToya Jackson's memoir she recounted how she kept pestering Michael to take her to the Grammys. He was one of the most popular entertainers in the world at that time and I guess she wasn't the publicity she was sure would come from being Michael's "girl." He asked LaToya to tell her to lay off but she told him it was his problem, deal with it. Milquetoast Michael caved in and took her as his date...along with Emmanuel Lewis. They looked ridiculous. Realizing they were laughingstocks, Brooke exclaimed "they're making fun of us!" It occured to Michael that it might be a good thing for him to have a "girlfriend", so they were the odd couple for quite a while. Eventually she distanced herself from him after the child molestation accusations started to heat up. She hadn't had anything to do with him for years, but when he died she popped up at his televised memorial service to speak of her "dear friend."

Actually Brooke played Noah's biological grandmother who had him kidnapped while he was out shopping with his nanny! IIRC, at first she fought for custody of Noah, then Olivia Benson settled on Brooke's character visiting Noah.
The kidnapping does seem to close the door for future appearances by Brooke. I don't understand why they did this, they could have had a story line filled with tension about Brooke's character trying to gain custody because she was, if I remember correctly, the only living close biological relative.

I don't think Brooke likes the sexy sex part of sex. She's never once been sexy, she just did what she was told when she was young. She rubbed her legs together and licked her lips in some jeans. Some people just don't have a sexual vibe. So she happily bearded for a lot of guys and loved them platonically, then married a another nonsexy sexy athlete and later the frumpy husband to breed with. She cried a lot after having children and felt like Marie Osmond, aka she wanted to kill herself and her children and got an Oprah appearance out of it. So Menopause hits women like this hard. There's just not enough love juice and endolphins inside them. Now she's a man.

It is interesting that Brooke - one of the great beauties of the 80s - hasn't seemed to have had any awful face work done at this point. I always got the feeling that she wished she'd been known for more than just being a pretty face and that's why she still works so hard on acting and takes risks with her projects. It really is admirable.
To her, beauty was just something she was born with and she didn't have to work hard at it. She was smart enough to realize that she wouldn't look like that forever and got a warm, funny personality and developed her acting skills. Smart girl. I think all pretty flavors of the week should take notes.

Merv Griffin was an ass kisser to end all ass kissers. "The Blue Lagoon" was not critically acclaimed, it was panned. He said this to Lucille Ball: "You how word goes around this town fast...word is around that your "Mame" may be one of the best musicals ever produced." He actually SAID that.

[quote]They do go over some of her father's family....telling Shields one of her ancestors on that side was born in the Louvre (when it was still a palace) and that through her she's a direct descendent of Charles IV of France, and Charlemagne (Charles the Great.)
The ancestor born in the Palais de Louvre was Christine Marie of France, daughter of King Henry IV of France and the Austro-Italian Marie de' Medici. Christine Marie married Victor Amadeus I, the Duke of Savoy, and as regent of the Duchy of Savoy, Madama Reale, as she was known, elevated the court at Turin to rival that of her sister's, Henrietta Maria, Queen Consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The Dukes of Savoy eventually became the Kings of Sardinia and later the Kings of Italy. So, just through her, Brooke has family ties to the courts of France, Italy, Austria, and Spain.

Some of her looks can seemingly be traced back to her grandfather Frank Shields. He was a famous tennis star and ladies man, who was so goodlooking he was put under contract in Hollywood for a few years, and made some movies

Frank was way better looking than Brooke. She has a Frankenstein quality to her brow and jaw bones and that thick neck in old age. So many older gays are here projecting their lost looks onto her own.
And the old queen obsessed with her lineage can go back to those jerk off Matt Damon was emperor of France threads. Bottom line is Shields is extremely lucky to be RICH. Because she is talent free and has not much personality either. A nice mannish married rich lady with too good manners. Most old fags on here would call her a frau if they hadn't grown up wanting to be her.

I think the thing that helped her is she did not give up. I mean basically, between ENDLESS LOVE and her guest spot on FRIENDS, she barely had a truly respectable credit in TV and film. She did lame TV movies you can't remember the names of, straight-to-video movies like BACKSTREET DREAMS....some bits in Muppet movie crap.
She did do smaller parts in some independent films that I guess nudged her toward acting more naturally. AND I SAY ALL THAT AS SOMEONE WHO LIKES HER. But really, that mid-career era of hers is very spotty. But at least she kept working until something better came along. And took Broadway replacement roles to give her more experience actually [italic]acting. (And she took any commercial endorsement offer that came along to keep some money coming in.)

Screaming starts at 23:20. The crew was right. She does have a great scream and is pretty believable here. I've always thought the two hardest genres to play are horror and comedy, because you have to give so much energy to pretend that some the dumb things you're asking to do are real.

She's doesn't strike me as being very bright. Having been an model from the time she was an infant and a celebrity since age 12 she does know how to handle herself in interviews and how to cultivate her image. i always thought her bearding for Michael Jackson reprehensible. She did it for the publicity, no doubt. She was his "girlfriend" for years but as he became more and more bizarre and the sexual abuse accusations started to heat up she distanced herself from him. When asked about him she would previously say "I love him dearly" but clammed up after he got into serious trouble for his sleepovers with 13 year old boys. After his death she popped up to speak at his memorial service, even though they had had nothing to do with each other for many years. Her behavior has always been very calculated.

Really? Assuming that's true, that doesn't change the fact that she was given special treatment while she was there. And her course load reveals she DID get special treatment. She had it easy there., no doubt due to her celebrity.
And you can be "calculated" without being intelligent. I'd say she's good at being a celebrity, knows how to "play the game", but has never indicated that she has much intellect.

I think she wanted to go to college just for the "experience." She sure didn't go to get an education, not with those courses. I'm surprised she didn't take a class in basket weaving. And I think the whole "Brooke Shields goes to college" thing was another attempt to cultivate her image, which was "hey, I've been promoted as a sex symbol since I was 10 years old but I'm just a normal kid like everybody else!" Despite the nude photos at age ten and the Calvin Klein commercials and the sexual movie roles she has always tried to portray her self as "wholesome", even to this day.

Her course load contained no courses in classical studies (history, philosophy, literature of the ancient world), medieval history, modern history or American history; no hard science (physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy) requiring any kind of lab; no math; no anthropology; no economics; no political science or government; no basic sociology; no world literature; no American literature; no geography; not even computer literacy. Her daughters are ordinary looking. Brooke Shield's looks were always kind of freakish. Even as an infant she had well-defined, mature features. There was a photo of her (maybe taken by Scavullo) where she's a little girl and she's topless; a critic noted the stark contrast between "the child's body and the woman's face."
