Actually, her great grandmother was a Black woman from Venezuela, an Afro-Venezuelan.  She came to the US and married an African-American man.  Her father is a descendant of that great grandmother's marriage.  This is why she refers to her father as an African-American, because only her great grandmother was from Venezuela and she married an African-American man.
