Silent Hill by Kendrick Lamar and Kodak Black

Oddly enough, Kodak Black’s lyrics on “Silent Hill” are actually more exquisite than those of Kendrick Lamar. That’s not to say that what he’s putting forth is more pertinent though. Instead, Kodak’s offering can also be deemed more braggadocious, on top of him alluding to being more or less fully engaged in a criminal lifestyle.

But where the vocalists meet is in both using the opportunity of “Silent Hill” to address the likes of opps. Or put differently, the rappers are, in their own respective ways, letting their rivals know that they cannot match up to their level of success and toughness.

But interesting to note is that amidst all of the boasting, both Kendrick and Black express a dedication to their family, i.e. their children. And as far as the title goes, it’s a matter of debate in terms of how it actually fits into the lyrics. But also interesting to point out is that Silent Hill is in fact the name of a popular videogame series that dates back to the late 1990s.

The Collaboration

Some people were surprised by the Kendrick and Kodak Black collaboration. The former is from the West Coast and is generally thought of as the most intellectual rapper in the game, while the latter hails from the East Coast and is the type who is perpetually in trouble with the law. But in fact in addition to serving as a co-headliner on “Silent Hill”, Kodak also pops up on three other songs found on “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”. And for the records, those are “Worldwide Steppers“, “Rich” and “Mirror”.

Kendrick’s cousin Baby Keem, who is also a well-known rapper, served as an additional co-writer.

“Silent Hill” was put out by Aftermath, Interscope and Top Dawg on 13 May 2022.
